WSC Looking To Revive Center For Crafts

The Worcester State College Board of Trustees has voted to form an alliance with the Worcester Center for Crafts, which closed its doors in January because of budget problems.

The college said it is developing a new Bachelor of Arts degree in interdisciplinary visual and performing arts, and work with the center could strengthen the program.

WSC said it will continue discussions with the center and finalize plans over the coming months.

The Worcester Center for Crafts began in 1856 as a project of The Women's Employment Society, helping immigrant women learn sewing and embroidery to earn a living. It expanded to offer a wide variety of classes, including woodworking, photography, pottery and glass work. At its height it employed more than 75 part-time faculty and six full-time studio heads and had a budget of $2.5 million.
