Xerox software automatically remove confidential information

Xerox Corp. said it is designing software that automates the removal of confidential information from documents.

The software, called "Intelligent Redaction," will automatically remove references to information that a user marks confidential.

When users identify information to be protected, the software automatically redacts all references to the information throughout the document. The information is classified and automatically redacted in other documents.

The process ensures a consistent level of security, saves time and increases redaction accuracy, Xerox said.

Information on a bank loan application, for example, could be redacted to bar access to information by various bank employees, but a code would make data available to top managers.

The Stamford, Conn.-based office equipment manufacturer has not decided when the new technology will be available, a spokesman said.

Xerox developed the software with researchers from Palo Alto Research Center Inc., which is part of Xerox.
