ACT To Begin Stem Cell Trial

Advanced Cell Technology Inc. , which has a laboratory facility off Plantation Street in Worcester, will conduct clinical trials of stem cell therapies for the treatment of heart disease.

ACT, which is based in Los Angeles, will conduct the trials at Chandler Regional Medical Center and the Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, both of which are part of the Catholic Healthcare West system and located in California and several other western states.

The trials will focus on patients who are not eligible for angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery, but whose quality of life is low due to heart disease. Researchers hope the treatments tried will correct heart failure rather than simply slow it.

ACT's therapy has already completed phase one trials and has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin the phase two trials.
