American Superconductor wins Navy contract

American Superconductor (AMSC) signed a cost-plus-fee contract worth $5.3 million with the U.S. Navy's Naval Sea System Command to design high temperature superconductor (HTS) ship propulsion motors and power electronic drives.

AMSC will focus on motor, drive and electrical system options for the first increment of the contract, valued at $1.9 million.  The parts are optimized for possible integration into later flights of DDG-1000 and CG(X) surface combatant ships.  This preliminary stage of the contract is expected to be finished within the next six months.

The Westboro-based company is currently performing final assembly and component testing of its 36.5 MW HTS propulsion motor for the Office of Naval Research at a Northrop Grumman Marine Systems site in the Philadelphia Naval Business Center.
