Andrea Lynn Cosmopoulos

Age: 33.  Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Consultant,
UnumProvident Corp., Worcester

Patrolling college dormitories as a resident assistant requires dishing out discipline, holding floor meetings, and, as Andrea Lynn Cosmopoulos would find out, counseling students. The senior vocational rehabilitation consultant at UnumProvident Corp. in Worcester took her collegiate experience to heart and began a career focused on helping others.

After working for the state as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, Cosmopoulos joined UnumProvident Corp. to help disabled clients get back to work. She notes that the claims she fields involve disabilities of all kinds: Patients on the road to recovery from cancer treatment, orthopedic surgery, heart disease and mental illness. She reviews the files of top-level executives and attorneys, all of whom are eager to rejoin the workforce.

"With our clients, it's not if I go back to work," says Cosmopoulos. "It's when I go back to work."
Acting as a bridge between prospective employers and the insured, Cosmopoulos sees that the transition is smooth when the client returns to work.  She develops a detailed understanding of what her clients do for a living, and then screens potential vendors for the right fit. Says Beverly Erikson Stewart, director of clinical and vocational resources at UnumProvident: "Andrea brings a genuine interest about people and a desire to assist them in achieving the highest level of functioning possible."
Using her own skills to better the lives of others is a familiar concept to Cosmopoulos, who volunteers as a Big Sister with an eight-year old she's mentored for two years, and serves on the board of directors for the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester. And, for the third time, she has received the Junior Achievement All-Star recognition for volunteering done through JA.
