In an effort to place more animals into homes, prospective pet owners at East Brookfield-based nonprofit Second Chance Animal Services will not have to pay adoption fees for certain cats and dogs on Thursday.
The endeavor, part of the ASPCA’s Rescue Effort campaign, will see the ASPCA cover adoption fees for dogs eight-months-old and older and cats two-years-old and older on Thursday.
“We’re honored to be part of the Rescue Effect,” Lindsay Doray, chief development officer at Second Chance, said in a Tuesday press release announcing the shelters’ participation in the program. “This initiative comes at a critical time when so many pets are waiting longer for homes. We hope to give more pets the second chance they deserve and make room to help even more animals in need.”
The campaign comes as Central Massachusetts animal shelters are dealing with a surge in available animals spurred by higher costs of living, pet supplies, and veterinary care. Second Chance encourages people to participate in temporary fostering of animals if they are unable to adopt.
ASPCA’s Rescue Effort campaign involves $2 million in grants to cover adoption fees for animals across the country. Second Chance will hold additional Rescue Effort days on Aug. 14, Sept. 4, and Sept. 25, according to ASPCA’s website.
Founded in 1999, Second Chance operates community veterinary hospitals in North Brookfield, Southbridge, Springfield, and Worcester. The nonprofit helped more than 56,000 pets in 2024, according to the press release.
