Dudley Co. Fined For Well Contamination

Dudley-based Webco Chemical Corp. has been hit with a $7,900 state Department of Environmental Protection penalty for failing to meet cleanup requirements stemming from the contamination of drinking water wells a decade ago.

According to the DEP, Webco discovered volatile organic compounds in a drinking water well at its facility in 1997. Subsequently, the company found low levels of those compounds in nearby residential drinking water wells.

However, the DEP found during an audit that the company failed to adequately assess or mitigate the contamination in the private wells. The DEP has ordered Webco to install treatment systems on the affected wells and to develop a well sampling plan. The company paid $5,400 of the penalty and DEP suspended the balance contingent upon Webco following the well sampling plan.
