Two local companies will pay EPA fees to settle charges of environmental violations.
Crabtree Development of Ayer will pay $27,500 and donate a 7.6-acre parcel to the town to settle claims regarding water pollution generated by the construction of its Pingry Hill development.
The EPA said the donated land is mostly wetlands but also includes some other space, and the Ayer Conservation Commission will be able to use it for educational purposes.
Hudson Color Concentrates of Leominster will pay $17,409 to settle claims about hazardous waste. The EPA said the company, which makes color pellets for the plastics industry, mishandled waste containing lead, as well as florescent light bulbs containing mercury.
According to the EPA, Hudson has already eliminated the use of lead pigments and changed its disposal process for light bulbs as the result of a Sept. 1 EPA complaint.
