First-time jobless claims rise in late Sept.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 317,000 Americans filed for unemployment insurance for the first time during the week ended Sept. 29.

That's an increase of 16,000 from the previous week. The department's four-week "moving average" was 312,750, an increase of 500 from the previous week.

The department's advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ended Sept. 22, unchanged from the prior week.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs was 253,554 for the week ended Sept. 29, an increase of 4,930 from the previous week. There were 249,288 initial claims in the same week in 2006.
