So, there are too many grocery stores in Central Massachusetts (“Saturated With Supermarkets?” Nov. 21, 2011, Page 1). Really? Have you turned your eyes to the northwest corner of Worcester County recently? Of course not! Nothing going on out there! A wasteland!
FYI: The "glut" of food stores out here includes one IGA in Barre, one Hannaford serving the entire North Quabbin region of Athol, Petersham, Phillipston, Templeton, New Salem, Wendell and Orange, and a whopping two grocery stores in Gardner. Oh, that's right, you reported that someone is considering opening a store in Gardner in a two-year time frame. Sure. Believe it when it happens.
I understand it's a business decision on the part of the food store companies: Northwest Worcester County lacks the appropriate demographics to justify the 30-year return on investment required to open a new store.
But please spare me the pity on the poor folks of Shrewsbury, Grafton and Framingham, suffering under the weight of all those choices. Send them out our way to grocery shop; the lack of choice will simplify the decision-making process for their poor, beleaguered minds!
