Housing corporations agree to $182,000 lead paint settlement

Three housing corporations in New Haven have agreed to a $182,000 settlement of claims involving lead paint in 20 apartments.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the corporations will pay a $20,000 fine and replace 214 old windows in city apartments and will remove other lead-based paint hazards.

Karissa Van Tassel had set off the federal inquiry in September 2004 after her toddler son and infant daughter were found to have elevated blood lead levels.

The housing corporations are Edgewood Village Inc., F.O.H. Inc. and Yedidei Hagan Inc.

EPA regulations require landlords to inform all tenants in housing built before 1978 of dangers associated with lead-based paint.
