EPA says Connecticut companies increased toxic pollutants

Federal environmental officials say Connecticut companies pumped out slightly more toxic pollutants in 2006 than in 2005.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says pollutant releases were down overall throughout New England.

EPA scientist Dwight Peavey says it's not clear why there was an increase and he can't point to any one industry as the cause. He says it could simply be the result of an increase in manufacturing activity.

The toxics inventory tracks emissions into the air, water and land.

In Connecticut, 348 facilities reported releasing approximately 4.9 million pounds, an increase of 78,483 pounds, in 2006.
