With many companies running leaner than they'd ideally like, every hiring decision counts even more than usual. The administrative staffing firm OfficeTeam has some advice for companies looking for top performers.
The firm says interviewers need to look for seven traits, namely:
A winning mindset: optimistic, yet realistic. Ask candidates how they've handled challenges like budget cuts or difficult bosses.
Willingness to change: the ability to tackle problems from multiple angles. Ask how they adjusted their strategy to improve a project's outcome.
Quickness on their feet: Ask how they would handle an irate customer. It's a test of how quick-thinking they are.
An eye on the prize: striving for success. Ask candidates to describe their greatest achievement. It's important to see how they think about success.
Ability to make tough calls: good judgment on difficult choices. Have them describe their process in a complex decision they made.
Good sportsmanship: ethics first. Ask them to describe an ethical issue they faced. Also ask references about their integrity.
A fan base: more than references. Great job candidates will provide references who sound enthusiastic when they talk about them.
