The former Thomas Henry Hearthstone Inn in Sturbridge is up for sale for $1.7 million. According to listing agent Kelleher & Sadowsky Associates of Worcester, the 105-seat restaurant and 12-room inn at 453 Main St. has been vacant for about six months.
Paul Matt of Kelleher & Sadowsky says the 2.14-acres site is owned by the Atlantic Group of Portland, ME, which took over a bank note on the property. The facility, built by the Petrofsky family in 1989, also includes a second, 4,765-square-foot retail building that formerly served as a shop for hand-made Windsor chairs and furnishings.
Tri-community Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Alexandra McNitt acknowledges that the former Inn is part of a string of business closures in that part of Sturbridge in recent months. Basketville recently closed its long-time retail store a few buildings down from the Inn, leaving several empty buildings. "I am saddened by that particular stretch of Route 20," McNitt says.
