Marathon Hires Former IBM Exec As CEO

Former IBM executive Jim Welch has been named the new president and CEO of Littleton-based Marathon Technologies.

Welch takes over for company CFO Dan Sullivan, who has served as interim CEO of the data recovery software maker since July after former CEO Gary Phillips left the company.

Welch guided Ascential Software Corp. into an acquisition by IBM in 2005 and was eventually promoted to vice president and general manager of IBM's InfoSphere Software business.

Marathon is privately held and funded by three venture capital firms. The company's software protects Microsoft Windows servers against failure in order for them to remain available and operational at all times.
