The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Massachusetts dropped to $3.35 on Tuesday, three cents lower than a year ago on Jan. 3, 2022.

The prices in Massachusetts are two cents lower than the previous week, while nationwide, prices climbed 12 cents to $3.22 a gallon in that same time, making Massachusetts prices thirteen cents higher than the national average, according to a Tuesday press release from travel association AAA Northeast.

The late December winter storm caused refineries to shut down and a spike in demand as people fueled up before the storm hit were contributing factors to the nationwide spike, according to AAA.

Regionally, Massachusetts prices are higher than Rhode Island’s at $3.25 and Connecticut’s at $3.17. On Jan. 3, 2022, Connecticut gas prices were higher than Massachusetts’ by 11 cents.

“The cost of gas may fluctuate due to less expensive oil and a return to seasonal driving patterns,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast vice president of public and government affairs in the press release. "But 2022 will go down as a record year with a national annual average of $3.96.”
