Mass Layoffs Fell In 2010

The number of workers displaced by mass layoff actions in Massachusetts fell dramatically between 2009 and 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In 2010, the state's employers laid off 15,749 workers in 170 mass layoffs, down from 25,608 in 2009. Only layoffs involving at least 50 people were counted.

The largest losses came in manufacturing, with 3,247. Makers of food products and fabricated metal products were hit particularly hard.

Compared with 2009, however, manufacturing did much better, since 8,884 jobs were lost to mass layoffs that year.

Transportation and warehousing saw 2,924 jobs lost in mass layoffs in 2010.

Altogether, the number of people who lost their jobs to mass layoffs was higher than in 2005 or 2008 but lower than in 2006 or 2007.
