MediaNews Group Inc., parent of the Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise will begin charging a fee for some articles on two of its newspapers' web sites beginning in May, according to a Bloomberg report.
The company, which filed for bankruptcy last month, said papers in York, Pa. And Chico, Calif., will give users free access to 25 "premium" articles each month and will charge a fee to see any articles beyond that.
The amount of the fee has not been determined, according to Bloomberg.
The pay system being adopted by MediaNews is similar to the one used by the New York Times and the Financial Times.
MediaNews owns 54 daily newspapers in the United States and is based in Denver, Colo., where it runs the Denver Post. It said it may extend the pay structure to other papers.
MediaNews' holding company Affiliated Media Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection about two weeks ago in an attempt to reduce its $930 million debt load. The company also operates 100 non-daily newspapers and several radio and television stations.
