St. Vincent's finalizing med student plan

July 1 deadline approaches

St. Vincent's finalizing With little time remaining before a July 1 deadline, spokesmen for St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester said it is close to finalizing a deal to fill 20 residency positions being vacated by University of Massachusetts Medical School students.

The University of Massachusetts announced last year that 20 of its surgical, emergency medicine and other medical residency positions would be removed from St. Vincent Hospital by July 1. The displaced residents will be relocated to UMass Memorial Medical Center and other UMass-affiliated hospitals in the area.

Another institution has been chosen to fill those spots, said Dennis Irish, spokesman for St. Vincent Hospital. The identity of that institution is being withheld while final details of the arrangement are made, Irish said.

Seamless transition

"The surgical residency program at St. Vincent's will continue," said Irish. He said there is no timetable for a further announcement, stating the need for privacy and the consent of all parties involved before such an announcement is made.

The decision last spring by UMass to remove some of its medical residents from St. Vincent's was viewed by some as a business-motivated act that may compromise the education of UMass medical students. St. Vincent's is a for-profit hospital owned by Nashville-based Vanguard Health Systems Inc. The 350-bed hospital in downtown Worcester is the primary competitor with UMass Memorial Medical Center, also in Worcester.

Irish noted that all efforts are being made to make the transition of residents as seamless as possible. Irish said it is possible, though not certain, that some advanced UMass residents in the later years of their training may remain at St. Vincent's to finish their residency.

"We're doing all we can to make this as seamless a transition as possible and to not compromise the residents' medical education," Irish said.
