State halves technical assistance grants, deadline near

The state's Department of Business and Technology said it would hand out about half as much in Small Business Technical Assistance Provider grants as it did last year.

Applications for the 2008 grants are now available.

The department said it would only review proposals from nonprofit, community-based organizations, community development corporations or community development finance institutions. The proposals must involve technical assistance or training programs for businesses with 20 or fewer employees in Massachusetts.

In 2007, the department granted $1.6 million in technical assistance grants. In 2008, the department has been authorized to give out $830,000. No company is allowed to receive more than $75,000 per year and can not receive more than $50,000 in any round of funding.

The deadline for applications is Sept. 14.
