State Jobless Rate Inches Up

The state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said 4.5 percent of the Massachusetts workforce was unemployed in December, a 0.2 percent increase from November.

The trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,000 jobs, the most of any sector during December.

Professional, scientific and business services jobs declined by 300 in December. The education and health services sector added 300 jobs during the month while the financial activities sector lost 400.

The construction and manufacturing sectors were down by 900 and 400 jobs respectively. The leisure and hospitality industry added 600 jobs in December.
