Worcester Polytechnic Institute is adding a master's degree in neuroscience to prepare students in jobs such as neuroscience research, pharmaceuticals and teaching.

Students may enroll in the new program now, with courses including biology, computer science, chemistry and data science. The program has four primary focus areas: computational neuroscience, cellular and molecular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, and psychological science.

The program is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in biology, biochemistry, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, psychology, or related fields.

WPI, which announced the new program Monday, said it will differ from similar neuroscience programs by focusing not only on the biological and psychological aspects of brain science and behavior, but also on computer science, data science and analytics, computational biology, and machine learning.

Medical scientist jobs are projected to grow 8% in the next decade, outpacing the total jobs rate, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those in the field make a median salary of $84,810, according to the bureau.
