The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICE) has honored a Worcester Polytechnic Institute professor for his work on inorganic membranes.
Yi Hua Ma, Frances B. Manning Professor of Chemical Engineering at WPI and director of the University's Center for Inorganic Membrane Studies, joined WPI in 1967. His work has focused on absorption and diffusion, inorganic materials and membranes, and membrane reactors. The results of his studies have been published in more than 100 scholarly publications and have resulted in four patents.
In the past decade, Ma and his team have worked to develop a chemical reactor using an ultra-thin membrane made of palladium to separate hydrogen derived from natural gas or renewable sources like corn. The project has received funding from Shell International Exploration & Production and Shell Hydrogen, as well as the U.S. Dept. of Energy.
Ma will be honored at the AICE's annual meeting in San Francisco next week.
