IPG: The Ultimate Welding Machine

Soon, the world may have Oxford-based IPG Photonics Corp. to thank for the solid, satisfying thump heard when closing the doors of a BMW.
IPG said its German subsidiary IPG Laser GmbH has received a "major order" from BMW for the company's Ytterbium fiber laser system. The automaker intends to use the lasers to weld automobile doors, IPG said. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
The contract is the first large-scale production use of a fiber laser system by a German auto manufacturer, IPG said. The laser systems, which can be used in a number of different industries, will be manufactured in Germany and are scheduled to be delivered to BMW in the fourth quarter.
