Report: Unemployment Will Peak Next Year

The New England Economy will not regain pre-recession employment levels until 2013, a University of New Hampshire economist predicted yesterday.

Unemployment for the entire New England region could continue to rise to 9.3 percent until the first quarter of 2011, said UNH Professor Ross Gittell, who released his findings at the New England Economic Partnership economic outlook conference in Boston.

Gittell expects the regional economy to fare better than the national unemployment rate, which could rise to 10.3 percent next year.

The Massachusetts unemployment rate inched down this week from 9.3 percent to 9.2 percent in April.

Gittell said he expects some industries to grow during the next three years, including high technology, information services and construction.
