State's Sportsmen Aren't Shooting Blanks

The hunters and sport fishermen of Massachusetts say they're a bigger part of the state's economy than some of the state's largest employers and fastest-growing companies, and that sportsmen's spending is wilder than the game they seek.

According to a study by the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation , supported by the AAA, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the National Shooting Sports Association and others, sportsmen support more jobs in Massachusetts than Massachusetts General Hospital.

The report also concludes that spending by Massachusetts hunters and sport fishermen is more than the revenue of some of the state's fastest-growing companies and is nearly twice what the state's commercial fishermen take in.

There are 472,000 hunters and sport fishermen in Massachusetts, the report concludes, and they pump $2.3 million into the state's economy every day. The foundation said the report should encourage governments "to welcome and encourage hunting and fishing in their state."
